about
"Someday" is pure escapist harmony-drenched sunshine pop for those of you with a sweet tooth. I was suffering from a reality overdose so I brewed up this carbonated concoction to survive this most peculiar year. My aim was to write the sunniest, bubble gummiest, scrumpdiddlyumcious song imaginable. I don’t know if I succeeded but it will likely give you a sugar rush. I desperately needed a vacation from all the noise of 2020. While my life may not afford me the luxury of traveling the world, inside a video screen I can freely drift off to wherever the winds of imagination might take me. "Someday" hearkens back to a more innocent time. It's so out-of-step with the modern world, so completely removed from the here and now, that some might believe it was cut from the back of a cereal box. As a matter of fact, when spun backwards on your Kenner Close-N-Play record player, it reveals the following message, “Rice Krispies are delicious AND nutritious.” Childhood. How sweet it was. I fondly remember a world with no reality TV, internet, smart phones or 24 hour news. Escapism ruled the airwaves during those turbulent times. This was a world where astronauts discovered magic lamps on sandy beaches, comical castaways found themselves marooned on an island paradise, George Jetson complained about 3 day work weeks, and space cowboys boldly went where no man had gone before. This song was created within that same mindset. Although my generational references might not resonate with all of you, it doesn’t matter. We all have our safe places we run to when seeking refuge from this big and scary world - those hidden harbors of happiness that we drift to when the seas are rough. Although I wrote “Someday” 15 years ago, I never needed to record it until now. This celebration of tooth decay(!) is DIY top to bottom. Everything you see/hear was created in our home studio. No budget. No team. No clue. Here’s the studio breakdown. Stefan: slide guitar solo/tremolo guitar swells. Phyllis: vocals/rhythm guitar/ Hammond/bass/drums. Musician notes: 1. I’m not a drummer (out of necessity I thumped it out). Mics LOVE Epiphone Comet amps (they are the little engine that could). Rarely have a tracked a guitar part where the amp’s tone made it so effortless. Video notes: 1. All images were cheap toys, trinkets or homemade creations. 2. Everything was filmed at break neck speed on a run-of-the-mill handheld camcorder. 3. The only travel involved was a trip to the backyard. While this song on the surface may seem like a light-hearted romp, it touches on a deeper yearning. There’s a universal longing in all of us to find a shelter of serenity. In this world where trouble lurks around every corner, I find myself naively chasing after something that seems so clear in my mind’s eye, yet remains just out of reach. Someday I will find my bliss. It may be on the other side, but it’s surely coming. Ideally this song would have launched 3 months ago. But releasing it on Labor Day, which traditionally marks the unofficial end of summer, seems a most fitting farewell to this most splendid of seasons. Without further ado, I present my newest creation. This is my love letter to that enchanted endless summer that awaits all of us…someday.
Someday ... I'll catch a wave and ride a million miles
Someday ... I'll fade away and sign off with a smile
I'll find me a little island
Beneath the tropical breeze
Somewhere on the horizon
I'll finally get me some peace
I'll finally get me some peace
Someday ... I'll climb aboard a ship that flies through space
Someday ... I'll land a zillion light years from this place
I'll find me a distant planet
Beyond earth's gravity
Away from all this madness
I'll finally get me some sleep
I'll finally get me some sleep
INSTRUMENTAL
Somedays gonna be better
There's no more watches to wind
I'll be lost in forever
It's really just a matter of time
It's really just a matter of time
-Bridge-
Someday I will steal away but not today so I'm again
Traveling corners of my mind
Everyday's a holiday and who's to say it's just pretend
So long goodbye
Hello blue sky
High on Cloud 9 fly away
Someday ... it's beautiful someday
Someday ... hurry up someday
No farewells or sad goodbyes
No fears to quell or tears to cry
My mind's eye sees a peaceful shore
I'll find what I've been looking for
A moonlit bay where stars are bright
The air is warm and all is right
A hideaway where love is true
Somewhere it waits for me and you
It's beautiful
So beautiful
It's beautiful
Someday
